Derived from surname Jiang, Surname Lv is one of the four branches deriving from their ancestor of Yandi Emperor in the far ancient time whose surname was Jiang for he lived in the drainage area of Jiang River. The leader of that branch was bestowed a land (now Nanyang of Henan Province) to establish a kingdom named Lv in the Xia Dynasty. After Kingdom Lv had been eliminated by Kingdom Chu in the Spring and Autumn Period, people of Kingdom Lv changed their surname from Jiang to Lv, which is regarded as the orthodox branch of Lv families in history. Another branch of Lv families derived from another Kingdom Lv called Eastern Lv in history, which was located in Xincai, Henan Province and was actually a derivative of Kingdom Lv in Nanyang. After being eliminated by Kingdom Song in the Spring and Autumn Period, descendants of Eastern Lv took Lv as their surname.
Lv families moved frequently in all directions, covering many places of China. Lv families of Kingdom Lv moved to Hubei while those of Eastern Lv moved to southern Henan and northern Anhui. Many had moved to other Kingdoms long before that. Some of their descendants lived in Shaanxi Province and Gansu Province. In the Han Dynasty, some Lv families lived in Hebei, Shanxi, and Inner Mongolia. At the end of Eastern Han Dynasty, some of them moved to Anhui Province to escape the wars. Later, Lv families moved to Shanxi in the period of the Three Kindoms, to Zhejiang and Jiangsu in the Northern and Southern Dynasties, to Fujian at the beginning of the Northern Song Dynasty and then to Guangdong. Since the age of Shunzhi Emperor of the Qing Dynasty, some of the Lv families in Fujian and Guangdong moved to Zhejiang and Taiwan, later abroad, including Singapore, Philippines, Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, Brunei, Vietnam, America, Canada, etc.
